In past years Joel, through great effort and many hours of work, would organize and run a scale RC model aircraft competition held at 19 Wing. Joel was tireless in his support for the Air Force Museum and the Y2K Spitfire project. Sadly, Joel was killed in a helicopter crash in Sept of 2003 and this event is now held in his honour. This scale rally will feature scale model aircraft flight demonstrations, both military and civilian, from all over Vancouver Island as well as the Lower Mainland. The flyers will be showing off their scale aircraft while remembering a good friend and avid supporter of the Comox Air Force Museum and scale modeling. This year will feature some models powered by turbine engines with the speed and sound of the real thing. The event is open to the public 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily and admission is by donation. Bleachers, concession stand and comfort stations are on site. Entrance to the event can be gained through the Tee Pee Park campground at 19 Wing Comox. Persons not familiar with the base may proceed to the Comox Air Force Museum located at the main entrance to CFB Comox and follow the posted signs to Tee Pee Park. For further information contact the Comox Air Force Museum at 339-8162. |
